All Coolabah drought-tolerant varieties, including Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo, should be fertilised at the beginning of Spring and Autumn. A maintenance feed could be needed during the Summer months but try to avoid fertilising during extreme heat. Always refer to your lawn type and fertiliser label rates and packaging instructions for best results.
A new Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo lawn should be fertilised at least 5 weeks from the day it was installed. After that every 6-8 weeks will keep it looking nice and green year-round. Adequate applications of fertiliser will help maintain a healthy, weed free Sir Walter lawn. It will also help maintain Sir Walter’s soft broad-leaf texture, and proactively prevent any diseases or pest damage.
Fertilisation in Summer & Spring
- In early Spring, apply a complete fertiliser high in nitrogen to help the lawn come out of dormancy. Expect best results when fertilising in mid-September.
- Sir Walter loves chicken manure or dynamic lifter as an organic fertiliser alternative!
- If you choose to dethatch your lawn during early November, follow up with fertiliser to enhance recovery. Avoid doing this during extreme heat.
Fertilisation in Autumn & Winter
- Heavy fertilisation is recommended in Autumn (March-April) to help prepare a lawn healthy enough to prepare for the onslaught of cooler winter weather
- When spreading fertiliser, always wear eye protection and avoid filling the spreader while on the lawn – the slightest spill can affect your turf
- Use Premium Lawn Food especially developed for Sir Walter lawns
Unlike many other turf varieties, your newly installed Sir Grange lawn will not need a follow-up application of fertiliser after it has been installed. This perfect low-maintenance lawn will only require minimal fertiliser as part of its ongoing annual lawn care. Sir Grange requires much less nutrients than other traditional warm season grasses and needs only about ⅓ of the fertiliser used on many other lawns.
Fertilisation in Summer & Spring
- Fertilise between early Spring and mid to late Summer if required
- Apply Lawn Solutions Australia fertiliser at a rate of 10g/m2 or 1kg/100m2
Fertilisation in Autumn & Winter
- It is not recommended to fertilise Sir Grange in Autumn
- Liquid iron, micronutrients, and ColourGuard can be used to improve appearance over Winter
If you have the Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu instant turf variety, then it is critical to note that it should only be fertilised on an as-needed basis. You can fertilise it 6 weeks after installation and from there you can revisit with a top-up every 3 months. However, it’s not always needed. Monitor your lawn and maintain as needed.
Fertilisation in Summer & Spring
- You can choose to fertilise your Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu in early September using a complete fertiliser such as Lawn Solutions Australia fertiliser
- If your lawn looks to be losing its greenness/vibrancy you can use a slow-release fertiliser high in nitrogen
- Avoid over-fertilising in the Summer
- Avoid manure-based fertilisers
Fertilisation in Autumn & Winter
- The best time to fertilise Eureka Premium VG kikuyu is in Autumn. A generous fertilisation with a slow-release fertiliser rich in potassium and iron will strengthen this sun-loving grass during the cold winter months.
Nullarbor Couch has a higher maintenance regime than most turf types, and it’s recommended to fertilise it 2-3 times a year for vigorous growth. However, more applications may be required depending on your soil type. We also recommend fertilising a new Nullarbor couch lawn 5-6 weeks after installation.
Fertilisation in Summer & Spring
- Fertilise in early Spring with high nitrogen lawn food
- An application of fertiliser may be required over Summer if your lawn is in a high traffic area and stress.
- We recommend fertilising new turf 5-6 weeks after installing.
Fertilisation in Autumn & Winter
- Fertilise in mid-September for it to green up after Winter, with a second follow-up in early April to carry growth into the cooler winter months.
- We recommend using Lawn Solutions Premium Lawn Food at a rate of 2kg/100m2
- Irrigate your Nullarbor Couch immediately after fertiliser to prevent leaf burn
While one of the best features of TifTuf instant turf is its ability to retain superior colour even during winter dormancy, regular fertilisation is required to keep this TifTuf tip-top!
Each year, TifTuf will need a good quality nitrogen fertiliser about three times at ¼ the usual recommended amount. It might sound strange to use such little fertiliser, but TifTuf thrives in harsh conditions and too much TLC can end up damaging this unique low maintenance lawn!
Fertilisation in Summer & Spring
- Fertilise in both early Spring and late Summer. We recommend using Lawn Solutions Australia fertiliser at a rate of 10g/m2 or 1kg/100m2.
Fertilisation in Autumn & Winter
- Fertilise in early Autumn
- Apply Oxafert as a pre-emergent herbicide in Autumn to protect your lawn from weeds over Winter
- TifTuf growth can be maintained with reduced fertiliser so always monitor the growth and health of the lawn before applying.
If you are installing new turf then we do suggest using a starter fertiliser prior to laying. This will help to prepare your base and will kickstart your turf growth and give it the best chance to transplant.
You should apply a good all-rounder fertiliser to your new lawn 5-6 weeks after its initial installation. From there, use the above guide to help you determine the best time to fertilise according to the season and lawn type.
All Coolabah drought tolerant turf varieties, including Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo, should be fertilised at the start of Spring and Autumn.
To prepare your warm season grass varieties for the cooler months, Autumn fertilisation will encourage prolonged growth. This is the most important time to fertilise your lawn. Generally, two applications in the first week of April and the first week of May is recommended. As we come out of Winter, you should then think about fertising again around the start of September. A maintenance feed during Summer could be required to protect it from seasonal stress.
Watering your lawn immediately after fertiliser is crucial, as it will prevent leaf burn and other issues. We stock both LSA Premium Lawn Fertiliser and Lawn Hand Held Spreader to make your fertilising program easy.
