It’s a common misconception within some landscaping circles that instant turf shouldn’t be laid during winter. But with Sir Walter DNA Certified lawns, provided in a slab cut format rather than a traditional turf roll, instant turf installation can happen at any time of the year. Despite this, it’s important to note that the warmer months of spring, summer and early autumn are more suitable times of the year to lay a new lawn for optimal results. Find out more below.
Laying turf in winter
Despite the warm temperatures experienced in Australia throughout most of the year, it can get quite cold and frosty in some regions during winter. For this reason, in areas that get particularly cold in winter, such as Tasmania and southern Victoria, it’s best to avoid laying instant turf in winter and wait until spring. However, in regions that experience more mild winters, such as northern Australia, there are some benefits of laying turf in winter, including that there’s less irrigation required, you don’t need to wait for warmer weather, and your lawn will be fully established in time for summer.
At Coolabah Turf we implement a number of measures to ensure the turf we supply during winter is top quality. This includes the use of frost blankets and ColourGuard applications.
Laying turf in summer
Although summer can be quite hot in some regions of Australia, it’s still a reasonably good season to lay instant turf as the long hours of sunshine can help the turf grow relatively quickly. However, you’ll need to remember to water the turf every day during hours of weaker sun, such as the early morning and late afternoon, to ensure the roots remain moist. Otherwise you’ll find that the roots will dry out and die, eventually killing the turf.
Laying turf in autumn
Autumn can be a suitable time to lay instant turf if you do so in the earlier months before winter. This is to ensure your turf has established a deep root system and is growing effectively before the cooler weather sets in. Autumn provides a period of time where soil is of an ideal temperature and there is ample rain to grow your turf.
Laying turf in spring
Spring is generally considered to be the best time of the year to lay turf. This is because it’s during these months that foliage is flourishing and new shoots are sprouting. This will help your turf to quickly establish a deep-root system and thrive throughout the summer. Additionally, the temperature is starting to gradually warm up, and there’s still a chance of reasonable amounts of rainfall to provide water for your grass to grow.

How do I care for my new lawn?
Water your newly installed lawn within 30 minutes of laying the grass and continue watering daily until it’s firmly rooted. During warmer months, you may need to water 2-3 times a day for the first 1-2 weeks to ensure your turf doesn’t dry out while establishing in its new environment. Once your turf has established, provide it with deep, infrequent watering as necessary. It’s best tofertilise your new turf about six weeks after installation.

Will Sir Walter DNA Certified grass thrive in shady areas?
Sir Walter DNA Certified instant lawn is the king of turf in shade. It performs well in full sun and lightly shaded areas, requiring just three hours of sun per day to thrive. It has incredible shade tolerance, as its wide leaf enables it to catch more sunlight in a shorter space of time than other varieties.
