Frequently Asked Questions
All of our turf varieties perform well in the Melbourne climate, so choosing the lawn that best suits your lifestyle is the most important place to start.
The most important things to consider are the the level of sun and shade exposure in your yard, the salt level in your soil, water levels, wear and tear, look and feel, and ofcourse your budget. For durability and high wear, you can’t go past our TifTuf Bermuda and Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu varieties.
If you’re looking for low maintenance and shade tolerance, Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo is king.
When it comes to drought tolerant varieties, Sir Grange Zoysia, TifTuf Bermuda and Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu are top performers, and if you’re looking for a lawn that will stay green all year round, TifTuf Bermuda is your pick.
The short and simple answer is anytime you like! That said, spring is generally considered the best time of year to lay turf. This is because it’s during these months that foliage is flourishing and new shoots are sprouting. This will help your turf to quickly establish a deep-root system and thrive throughout the summer.
While the warmer months of spring, summer and early autumn are ideal for new turf installation in the Melbourne climate, with the right type of turf and preparation, you can successfully install turf in winter. Although it may take a bit longer to establish, it requires significantly less water to do so, and by the time summer comes around your new lawn will be in full swing.
If your lawn is in full shade during winter and has high foot traffic (for example you own dogs) then it’s best to wait until the warmer months to ensure a successful project outcome.
Your lawn will only be as good as the soil you’re laying it on, so for best results it’s worth spending the time to properly plan and prepare your site. To prepare your underlay for instant turf, first kill off any existing vegetation using a herbicide. Then hoe in and turn over the existing base and add in enough good quality soil underlay to create a 100mm base.
Ensure your soil pH is between 5.5 and 7 by using a pH testing kit and adjust as needed. A sand-soil base is always preferred over a clay base, and you can look at mixing in some organics to boost nutrients.
When looking to lay turf flush with an edge, keep your soil about 30-40mm below this height to allow for the thickness of the turf. Smooth out the rest of your soil, remembering to factor in drainage as you do so. Ensure the prepared surface is firm enough to walk on, but not packed too tightly. You also want to make sure the soil is moist to avoid scolding the roots, especially if laying during the warmer months.
