Our Chosen Turf Varieties Suited For Bendigo’s Local Weather Conditions
Bendigo enjoys a relatively dry, temperate climate with four distinct seasons. When it comes to turf, successful results depend on choosing a trusted grower and a quality product designed for these varied conditions.
Reasons to choose Coolabah Turf
PREMIUM TURF GROWN TO LAST A LIFETIME
Grown from carefully selected varieties, Coolabah Turf is grown to last a lifetime. We offer a range of instant lawn varieties including Village Green, Santa Ana Couch, Common Kikuyu and our most popular, Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo. Harvested fresh daily, our turf is a premium product that will stand the test of time.
SLAB CUT TURF
All of our turf is slab-cut and is extremely easy to install. It’s fast growing, with less water needed during establishment and it has a thicker soil base and root system. And there’s no need for top dressing, which means a big saving in both time and money.
DROUGHT & SHADE-TOLERANT
With a reduction in rainfall, it makes sense to use varieties that don’t require a lot of water. And our turf is designed to be drought resistant, so it’s the perfect choice for inland rural areas. It also does well in both sun and shaded areas, meaning it will thrive in most conditions.
PERFECT FOR KIDS AND PETS
The biggest lovers of your new lawn are likely to be your children and pets. So we’ve designed our turf to be friendly to both, offering a play area that’s soft underfoot, while standing up to plenty of punishment. Our Common Kikuyu is a particularly good choice for dog owners.

Instant Turf Installation Projects in Bendigo
Bridgewater Caravan Park Landscape & Turf Project
Bridgewater Public Caravan Park has long been a place to reconnect with nature, slow down and soak up the tranquility of the meandering Loddon River.
But the park hasn’t always been green and glorious. Almost 10 years ago – the park grounds were transformed into a stunning natural playground after the cabin accommodation, infrastructure and permanent vans were all destroyed by a devastating flood event.
Thanks to a common-sense approach and successful collaboration between council, park managers and private enterprise including Bridgewater Farmware, Coolabah Turf Instant Lawn, and Bendigo based Groundswell Civil and Landscape Services, the park landscape was redesigned and reconstructed with a core focus on enhancing the usability of the space.
City of Greater Bendigo Turf Project In The CBD
4700 square metres of turf laid in Bendigo’s Botanic Gardens
We began working with the City of Greater Bendigo (COGB) more than a decade ago to help them transition many of their parks and recreation areas to more appropriate turf varieties that are better suited to their climate, and in particular the hot dry summers endured in Central Victoria.
In 2010, COGB developed a master plan with a vision of becoming the world’s most liveable community. As part of that vision, they adopted a plan to significantly expand the Botanical Gardens to create more high quality open space, improve health and wellbeing, increase sustainability and improve the economy.
Our Coolabah Turf team had the privilege of supplying seven turf species for this contemporary Garden For The Future (GTFF). That included working with Lawn Solutions Australia, the University of Georgia and the International Turfgrass Group to trial some new turfgrass varieties on our Echuca Turf farm beforehand.
The end result was 4700 square metres of turf making up over 40 picnic lawns and a larger lawn that caters to events. The Bendigo GFTF is a living example of the ethos and environmental platform which underpins the foundation of everything we do at Coolabah Turf. It was an exciting project to be involved with because it included trial turf varieties, and because it operates only on recycled water, helps educate people on how to drought proof their gardens, and displays how plant species cope with the region’s climate.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can lay turf in Bendigo anytime you like! That said, spring is generally considered the best time of year to lay turf. This is because foliage is flourishing and new shoots are sprouting during these months.
This will help your turf to quickly establish a deep-root system and thrive throughout the summer.
While the warmer months of spring, summer and early autumn are ideal for new turf installation in the Bendigo climate, with the right type of turf and preparation, you can successfully install turf in winter. Although it may take a bit longer to establish, it requires significantly less water to do so, and by the time summer comes around your new lawn will be in full swing.
If your lawn is in full shade during winter and has high foot traffic (for example you own dogs) then it’s best to wait until the warmer months to ensure a successful project outcome.
