Here’s our complete rundown of each turf type to help make the decision-making process that little bit easier for you.
Sir Walter DNA Certified Turf
Features
Sir Walter DNA Certified is a premium quality soft leaf Buffalo grass that delivers a beautiful-looking and hard-wearing lawn that will last for years. It’s a low allergy variety that produces less pollen than other types of grass, so is a better choice for anyone who suffers from hay fever and allergies. It’s Australia’s go anywhere, grow anywhere premium lawn turf, and is the most versatile grass currently on the market. Sir Walter DNA Certified is also one of the most environmentally friendly grasses around, requiring less fertiliser and chemicals than other varieties.
Best used for
Sir Walter DNA Certified works wonderfully well for residential yards used by children or pets, and for low maintenance feature lawns in residential or commercial situations. It’s Australia’s number one selling grass and makes a great family lawn that can be used for all purposes.
Growth habit
Sir Walter DNA Certified has a fast, tight and creeping growth habit, and a root system that travels across the top of the soil rather than growing underneath it. This makes it much easier to manage than more invasive varieties.
Colour
A luscious, rich emerald green colour. It will stay mostly evergreen throughout the winter, with only minimal colour loss in most parts of Australia during frosty conditions.
Availability
Sir Walter DNA Certified is available all year round for full sun positions. It should only be installed in the warmer months between September and April for best results in shaded or high traffic areas. It needs just 2-3 hours of full sun per day, has very high shade tolerance and can thrive in direct sunlight or shade.
Toughness
Sir Walter DNA Certified is drought, shade, insect, weed and pet resistant, making it very tough, durable and easy to care for. Due to its fast, creeping growth habit, it is self-repairing against damage caused by children, pets or high amounts of traffic over the lawn. It’s the most versatile grass on the market and will grow and thrive anywhere in Australia. It can survive drought, frost, extreme heat or full sun or shade. It’s also salt tolerant and able to survive in coastal areas or inland salinity regions.
Water usage
Sir Walter DNA Certified’s dense, lateral growth habit helps to slow evaporation, meaning it won’t need watering as often. It can also create a deep, thick root system, allowing it to thrive without drying out during the warmer months.
Maintenance
Sir Walter DNA Certified will provide you with a very low maintenance lawn, and you won’t need to spend as much time on mowing, weeding, watering or fertilising as you would with other varieties of grass.
There are a few things to keep in mind however.
- Once a Sir Walter lawn has been established, it should only need deep, infrequent watering.
- Never mow lower than 30mm to ensure healthy growth and a soft leaf texture.
- A regular fertilising regime is essential, in mid-September to green the lawn up after winter, and again in April to stimulate growth into the cooler months.
While the initial cost of a Sir Walter DNA Certified lawn is slightly higher than some other varieties, it’s a more cost-effective choice in the long run as the ongoing costs of watering and maintaining this variety of grass are significantly less than any other turf variety.
Sir Grange Turf
Features
Sir Grange is a fine leaf Zoysia turf that will thrive in full sun and part shade (needs at least four hours of direct or filtered sunlight).
Perfect for
It is the perfect low maintenance solution for a residential home yard requiring a feature lawn area that will have minimal foot traffic. Note that it’s not suitable for families with pets or kids. It is low water, once established, however, Sir Grange will need to be watered during establishment for at least the first 6 weeks until its roots firmly established in its new home. This turf can tolerate a wide range of mowing heights and requires minimal fertiliser as part of its ongoing maintenance.
Got shade?
We recommend Sir Grange being installed in any shaded or semi shaded area before the end of December.
Full sun?
We recommend Sir Grange be installed in full sun environments in Victorian landscapes no later than the end of February.
Got pets?
We DO NOT under any circumstances recommend anyone with any size dog purchase Sir Grange because Sir Grange’s lateral growth is so slow in southern climates, it is extremely difficult for it to recover from dog urine. This advice is only for Victorian landscapes. Sir Grange in warmer climates in northern parts of Australia will require different advice from your local Lawn Solutions Australia grower.
Characteristics
Dark green in colour, low-allergenic and has a fine leaf blade. Minimal damage when scalped. It requires 75% less nitrogen than other common turf varieties and up to 50% less mowing. Sir Grange can handle full sun, has a high wear tolerance and can be mowed at a wide range of heights. It is self-repairing, has a high drought tolerance and can survive sub-freezing temperatures. It is also weed and insect resistant and comes with a 10-year product warranty.
Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu Turf
Features
Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu is more active than other drought tolerant varieties of grass during winter. It has an attractive soft leaf and a medium texture, and is known for its dense coverage, and hard-wearing, low maintenance features. It will look good and perform well all year round.
Best used for
This is an ideal grass choice for those seeking a hard-wearing and low maintenance lawn. It works well in areas where opportunities for maintenance, water and fertiliser are limited, such as school ovals, community sporting venues, public green space corridors, nature strips or residential areas. It is a great option for non irrigated areas.
Not recommended for
Like most kikuyu turf varieties, Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu will not tolerate shade. For best results ensure your lawn area is going to be in a full sun environment (at least 6 hours of filtered/direct sunlight).
Colour
Eureka Premium VG is a bright green turfgrass that has superior winter colour retention, and is usually 2–3 shades brighter than common Eureka Kikuyu, making for a very visually appealing lawn.
Availability
Eureka Premium VG is available all year round in full sun conditions only. It won’t tolerate shade. With a strong winter growth pattern, it will establish itself easily in cool climates all year round.
Water usage
Eureka Premium VG is one of the most drought tolerant lawns available. It has a massive, fibrous root system that enables it to more efficiently absorb water and nutrients than other Eureka Kikuyu varieties.
Maintenance
Eureka Premium VG performs best when mowed to between 15 – 25mm with a cylinder mower. You will need to mow regularly during summer, dropping off to every few months during winter and spring. Don’t mow your Eureka Premium VG lawn too short in winter.
A Eureka Premium VG lawn should only be watered when necessary, as this will prevent unnecessary maintenance and high thatch build-up. In summer, this may mean a light watering is necessary every week.
Fertilise your Eureka Premium VG lawn at the start and end of summer, to keep it green and healthy throughout the year.
Nullabor Couch Turf
Best used for
Nullarbor Couch is the perfect option for professional sports turf environments and community sporting facilities due to its durability and tolerance. If you want to create a golf green or mini sports lawn in your backyard, look no further than this soft, yet hard-wearing grass. Nullarbor Couch can be mown very short (as low as 10mm in height) to produce a manicured-looking surface that will allow for balls to bounce well and games to be enjoyed. Mowing with a cylinder mower will give best results.
Not recommended for
It’s not ideal to grow Nullarbor Couch in areas near garden beds, as it has a very invasive and aggressive growth habit that may encroach upon the garden, and is susceptible to winter weed invasion.
Features
Nullarbor Couch is a summer active grass with an attractive fine leaf blade and high thatch. It creates a tidy, manicured and resilient lawn that is highly recommended for superior sporting surfaces, as well as domestic lawns, streetscapes and commercial landscapes.
Colour
Luscious mid-green. This grass will lose some of its colour during dormancy in the cooler months, although fertilisation can help improve this.
Availability
Nullarbor Couch can be grown all year round, although it does best in full sun conditions. It requires at least 6-7 hours of direct sunlight a day to thrive and maintain its green colour. It has a low dormancy, meaning it will get an early start to growth after winter.
Toughness
This grass recovers quickly from daily wear and tear and other stresses, with excellent wear tolerance. It can take a pounding from children, pets and high volumes of foot traffic. It has good disease resistance and will thrive in a wide variety of soil types. It also tolerates broadleaf herbicides very well and can handle frosty conditions better than other types of couch.
Water usage
Nullarbor Couch is one of the best choices for a hot and sunny climate, as it has exceptional drought tolerance and low water requirements.
Maintenance
You’ll need to stay on top of your mowing with Nullarbor Couch, and mow frequently-used areas every 5-7 days in summer. This can decrease to mowing every two weeks during winter.
A regular fertilisation schedule will ensure the grass stays green and healthy during winter. Fertilise Nullarbor Couch in mid-September to promote spring growth, and again in early April to ensure the lawn stays healthy throughout the cooler winter months.
Deep and infrequent watering is best to promote healthy growth. Early in the morning is the best time to water Nullarbor Couch. Watering may need to increase during prolonged dry periods.
